I realize that this is heresy here in Pittsburgh, but as a father of a college-aged daughter myself, my heart isn't into rooting for the Steelers any more as long as Big Ben is their QB. So, once his suspension is up, I'm going to eschew watching the Steelers, until Big Ben one day leaves or retires, & will be looking for a new NFL team to root for.
With this thread, I'm asking for your recommendations for a team to root for. Please explain your recommendation with sound reasoning.
Here's my thinking so far:
Teams I Can See Myself Rooting For & Why 1. Indianapolis Colts. I like Peyton Manning & the way the owner has tried to model his organization after the Steelers, wanting players of character who do good in the community. Hell, lately the Colts are more like the Steelers than the Steelers. Not sure I dig a domed stadium, however. 2. Cincinnati Bengals. Coach Marvin Lewis is from Pittsburgh & is a class act. 3. Detroit Lions. Being a Pirate fan has given me a lotta practice for what I'd be facing here.
Teams I Can't See Myself Rooting For & Why 1. New England Patriots. Coach Bellichick & Tom Brady are good at what they do, but as people they're big flops much like Big Ben. 2. New York Jets. Rex Ryan is as obnoxious as Buddy Ryan & I can't get into all the team's trash talking. Also, there's a part of me that wants Joe Namath to be the only QB to win a Super Bowl with the Jets, adding to the romance of what he accomplished. 3-6. Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, St. Louis Rams. Can't root for teams that left a city & broke little kids' hearts. Sorry. 7. Cleveland Browns. C'mon. They're the Browns. 8-9. Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers. Can't root for recent expansion teams. I feel that the fans should hafta suffer more before they taste success. 10. Oakland Raiders. I can't get into the circus that is Al Davis & I'm too lazy to keep track of what city they happen to be playing for each year. 11. Dallas Cowboys. America's Team & Jerry Jones = too flamboyant. 12. Minnesota Vikings. I'm too bored by the Brent Favre saga. Would the Second Coming get as much publicity as his annual unretirements?
There you have it. Now state your case if you so choose.

New Orleans Saints: Stayed in New Orleans after Katrina even though the owner could have moved them. Drew Brees, over achiever by NFL physcial standards. Tours New Orleans with Sean Payton after Kartina and signs with the team because he wanted to be part of rebuilding the region. Sean Payton for taking a team with a losing record like no other and turning them into Champions. They knocked Brett Farve out of the playoffs last year.

Hmmmm....I hadn't considered the Saints coz it just seemed too easy to pick last year's Super Bowl champs. But those are strong arguments for putting them among the teams I can see myself rooting for. I will ponder this over the next 5 weeks. I say 5 weeks coz I assume that the NFL is gonna reduce Big Ben's suspension to 4 weeks. The TV networks don't like it when the star QB's are out for a long time. After all, that's why we have all these sissy rules prohibiting QB's from being hit.

Normally it might seem like jumping on the bandwagon to choose the Saints but I believe we are actually at the inception of them becoming America's Team.

There are more "Steeler" bars all over the country than bars for fans of other teams in pro sports. I know people in California who have been in Heinz Field more often than I have.

I'm pondering that very idea thanks to Iron Rich's compelling argument. Some other friends of mine have also made strong arguments in favor of the Houston Texans.

Resist the urge to cheer for the Chicago Bears-(my team). Lot's of off-season moves were made, intended to shore up the defense. However, last season, the offensive line was bad, and still looks to be bad. Watch Jay Cutler get sacked, sacked and sacked some more, until he suffers a season ending injury-(my bold prediction).

With tomorrow being Big Ben's first game back, I'm sure you've all been on the edge of your seats waiting for my selection. The winner is:
GREEN BAY PACKERS
I knew that coach Mike McCarthy is from Pittsburgh. What I didn't know until recently was that he went to church where I'm now a member of the parish & makes substantial cash donations to the church each year. A guy worth rooting for & one who's helping out close to home.
So there you have it. I think we have an excellent chance of beating the Dolphins tomorrow. We're a little banged up, but the Dolphins are having trouble scoring.

I myself would have chosen the Detroit Lions simply on the fact that George Plimpton wrote a great book about them. I don't follow any team that closely. Sorry, but the way football is broadcast drives me up a wall. You see the play, then they have an instant replay. They dick around and have another play, a replay.......etc. If its a really good play you see it a dozen times and maybe get the play from another angle. The announcers are supposed to be non biased umm....... no they are really........ Sorry folks...... It just doesn't give me the thrill I need. ( Cue up BB King's The Thrill Is Gone. ) I gotta sweep up the ol' Fantasy Factory.

I agree wholeheartedly---Paper Lion was a great book & I can't tolerate the way NFL games are presented these days. I can usually sit thru one & when it's over, I have a headache. The problem is that the announcers are paid by the word & never shut the hell up. After a big play, the crowd is going crazy, & instead of just letting the moment pass, the analyst has to be shouting over them, describing a replay that I can see for myself ("He takes that football & runs up the football field.") Maybe I'm just getting cranky in my old age.

I ignored the Superbowl completely and listened to the local Doo Wop show on AM radio ! The only thing missing was Wolfman Jack !
