Been doing this at a few message boards, might as well do it here, too. Lately I've taken it upon myself to increase awareness of Maxine Sullivan. It's a shame that more people don't know about her, esp. people in Pittsburgh. Even her wikipedia page says simply that she was born & died & sang in between. She was born in Homestead & was one of the greatest, most underrated jazz/swing vocal stylists, whose career spanned 1936-87 (that's not a misprint). One of my hobbies is looking thru the music section at Barnes & Nobel at the Homestead Waterfront & complaining that they have no CD's by Maxine Sullivan. In fact, they're hard to find anywhere 'round these here parts. Somebody uploaded 8 of her songs to the Internet Archive. These are supposed to be old 78's that have fallen into the public domain, but I note that a performance from the 1975 Manassas Jazz Festival was sneaked in there. Check 'em out. My fave is "You Turned the Tables On Me," from Manassas.
