I remember my parents had many Mitch Miller albums when I was a kid. I think just about every household in America had a Mitch Miller album. My teacher in Parochial school would bring them in and conduct us like Miller. Here is his interview on AoAT. In part 2 he talks about the original War of the Worlds radio boradcast. "The people went beserk." www.emmytvlegends.org/interviews/people/mitch-millerThe kids should have revolted, tied the teacher up, and taken turns kicking or punching him in the cajones. Sing along with this teach. Oh wait a sec......... Parochial school ? Never mind, that involves old, dried up, prune faced hags with domination issues.

I think all homes had Mitch Miller records back in the day.
Last Christmas, at Jerry's they were giving away old Christmas records. I picked up a copy of Christmas Sing Along With Mitch for old time's sake.

Bummer.
Glenn Pavone, guitarist for Billy Price Band, dies Tuesday, August 10, 2010 By Scott Mervis, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Glenn Pavone, the longtime guitarist for the Billy Price Band and his own group, The Cyclones, died last night after a three-year battle with cancer at the age of 52.
Mr. Pavone, a native of Alexandria, Va., started playing guitar when he was 7 and performing when he was 9.
He came to Pittsburgh and spent nine years with the Billy Price Band, one of the most popular bands in the city during the '80s. He went on to record and perform with The Cyclones during the '90s.
Mr. Pavone is survived by his wife Nancy, of Edgewood. Arrangements for the funeral are pending.

Nellie King - Pirate Pitcher and Broadcaster of colon cancer at age 82.
I remember him and Bob Prince doing the radio play-by-play as a kid and can still hear them in my mind. They were the best!
Now he and the Gunner can call plays in heaven - with Roberto Clemente on the field.

That was sucky news about Nellie King, but not real surprising. I was at a Dukes game this past season when he was honored at halftime. He was wheeled out in a wheelchair & looked old. He & the Gunner were indeed the best.
Nellie came out to the Forbes Field Wall to hang out with us one year, I think around 1995-96, for our annual celebration of game 7 of the '60 Series. It was a Steeler Sunday so we only had about 15 people show up. We sat around a small tape player & Nellie commented on stuff that happened in the game as it played on the tape, good insider baseball stuff. Being part of a small group that had Nellie as our personal commentator is something I won't forget.
When the Bucs invited him back to broadcast the final game at 3 Rivers, I was the fan who suggested it. It was before the final season. I was laying in bed with the flu, listening to a Dukes game broadcast by Ray Goss & Nellie, when the Burgermistress came upstairs & asked if there was anything I wanted. I said, "Yeah. I wanna hear Nellie King broadcast one more Pirate game." She's used to weirdness from me so she just walked away. But as soon as I could get outta bed, I typed out a letter to Lanny Frattare. I got a thank-you note back saying he loved the suggestion & would pass it on. After the season, he sent me another thank-you note. Both are in my "baseball stuff" collection.
RIP, Nellie.

Just remembered that we can attach files here & that I now own a scanner. So here's a picture of Nellie hangin' out at the wall with us. According to what I wrote in my photo album, it was 1995, & since I've never been known to lie about such things, that's the date we're goin' with. Attachments:

Barbara Billingsley. " Ward, weren't you a little hard on the Beaver last night ? " Sorry. I can't imagine growing up without watching Leave It To Beaver. Even if you hadn't seen her in a while, she will still be missed.

Man, I just can't get the song "Storybook Children" outta my head since hearing the news.... If the world were fair, this would be getting a lot more play on the news, but the Cool Ruler of reggae, Gregory Isaacs, has passed away at the age of 60 after battling lung cancer & drug addiction. Some personal thoughts & recollections before I pass along the link to his obit: I was lucky enough to see Isaacs perform from a front row seat in the ol' Syria Mosque when Reggae Sunsplash '84 came thru here. There were, I recall, 3 acts before him, all dressed up in their Rastafarian garb. Then out comes the Cool Ruler in a 3-piece suit & tie & a straw hat, strolling back & forth right at the front edge of the stage during his whole performance, & the audience was just eating outta his hand. By the time he was halfway into his first song, we'd all forgotten who else had played. What an entertainer! If you like reggae---& providing it's still in print---one album that you really need is Mr. Isaacs. Horns buzz like bees from speaker to speaker & you can just feel Isaacs sweating as he sings. I believe it was released in 1982 & I still play it fairly frequently. Now to the obit: www.nytimes.com/2010/10/26/arts/music/26isaacs.html/partner/rssnyt?_r=2

Actress Lisa Blount passed away, found dead at her home in Arkansas. Lisa was only 53. The online mainstream media quite predictably only mentions her succussful mainstream work- An Officer And A Gentlemen-1982, but horror fans may remember her in the superb DEAD & BURRIED-1981, as well as Ruggero Deoadato's CUT AND RUN-1985.
RIP :-(
