Watched the trailer for this movie last night. Not sure if I want to see it before it gets to DVD. I had never seen the original until a month ago. The original was not a good movie so I don't think I'll be looking at this remake with the same critical eye that I view most remakes. But that doesn't mean this movie is worth paying to see in the theaters.

srsly? the original is harrowing! i mean, i get it if you don't like the rape/revenge as a genre, but i thought it was a fucked up film that did what it set out to do. i'm curious to see if the remake brings about a resurgence of the rape/revenge film in the popular arena.

I think my problem with the orginal is the really bad acting and poorly written lines. The story itself was a strong concept.

I can understand where both of you are coming from, Mayday and Rich. I like the movie but some of the writing is quite laughable. You have to be able to get past that and look at the story itself.

Chaos? I don't think I have seen it. I will have to add it to my list.

I love Last House, which is why I'm not looking forward to the remake. I just have this feeling it's gonna pull its punches, and what I like about the original is that it doesn't. If I hear otherwise, I'll give it a look...but with arms crossed.

Okay, see what I wrote above? Kinda/sorta scratch that. I say kinda/sorta because I still have my doubts. But the more spots I see -- and good God, they're running constantly -- I'm getting more curious.

so i watched the original over the weekend and just saw the remake today. i liked it. i had a few issues, so the like/dislike runs as follows:
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
like: mary's character development. so they added this idea in that she's a swimmer, an athlete. and she loves swimming in the lake. i liked that a lot. part of the original that i liked was how mari walked into the lake after she was raped. the way she does it, all in a trance, just struck me as profoundly damaged and profoundly creaturely. something a fatally injured wild animal would do. so in the remake, after she's raped, she mumbles about how she wants to go for one last swim. and she starts swimming for home and they're taking a million shots at her and she's just swimming so strong & then she's shot.
the rape was awful. i wanted to kill the whole world, but it was done differently. less humiliation. no forced sapphic activity. and no nudity, which was interesting to me. it was so different from the first one. they didn't carve Krug into mary; paige wasn't disemboweled or dismembered. that being said, i cried. i absolutely hated the world and cried when mary went to walk down to the lake.
the dude who played Krug played a serial killer on Deadwood. he did a good job.
the parents' handling mari when she makes it home. the dad's medical skills in taking care of her. this was really glossed over in the original, but in the remake, it was there and i loved it, including the dad cauterizing the bullet wound and cutting her to help her to breathe better. and talking to her the whole time. yes, the parents were absolutely functional and credible and awesome.
dislikes: NO CASTRATION. what the fuck? if anything was primal and awesome about the first, it was the mother's fucking badass castration. fuck them cutting that out. i hated that. it should have been in there.
the lesbianism was played down. remember when paige hits the girl with the rock in the orig & calls her a damn dyke or something like that? yeah, it's really not in this one. but the woman is creepy, just in a different way.
the ending. they get mari and justin (the equivalent of willow from the first one) and race off for the hospital. not as bleak. disappointing.
i thought it was worthwhile. the people in the theater were a surprising mix: group of four girls in front of us, two guys in the back, one teenage girl with her parents and the rest were people older than i. and the only time anyone in the audience made noise was when the parents started their revenge sequence. the guys started laughing.
