I realize we have a thread where deaths are announced, but IMHO this is a guy who deserves one to himself. Rockabilly legend Dale Hawkins has passed away after a battle with cancer. How is Dale Hawkins not in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame? Others wonder the same thing & are trying to do something about it.This is the guy who gave the songs "My Babe" & "Suzy Q." He also, in the most interesting part of his history to me, had in his band & introduced us to guitarists Carl Adams, Roy Buchanan, James Burton, Fred Carter, Scottie Moore, & Kenny Paulsen. These guys all belong in the Hall themselves & would make any knowledgeable fan's list of the top guitarists in the early years of rock-n-roll. I always imagined Hawkins starting out as a 17-year-old kid in Shreveport, LA & saying, "Damn, one of the greatest guitarists in rock-n-roll history just left my band! Looks like I gotta go find another one!" "The Hawk" was going strong right to the end. Here's some fairly recent videos of him performing his signature songs.

It's a slow night 'round here & there's not enough enthusiasm for this thread or the petition to put Dale Hawkins into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame. So it looks like I'm just gonna hafta tell you the story of how I got into Dale Hawkins, & maybe you'll be more enthusiastic about all this.
In the '80's I was in a record store & saw an album with a plain cover that said in gray letters "Dale Hawkins" amongst a red background. I noticed it was on Checker, a label that never let me down before, so I picked it up to take a look. On the reverse was a picture of a guy who looked like he was 17 years old, had his mouth open, & was pointing at nothing. I loved the song titles---"Suzy Q," "Little Pig," "See You Soon Baboon," "Gooblie Booblie," (sung by the artist as "Gooble Wooblie," I found when I got the record home), "The Hawk Walks," etc.
Then I noticed that the liner notes were written by Cub Koda---best liner notes I'd ever read, in fact, mentioning, inter alia, some of the guitarists I mentioned above. So in a few short seconds, I found out 4 things to recommend about Dale Hawkins---the crazy song titles, his taste in guitarists, Cub Koda liked him, & he could point at nothing. (After all, anybody can point at something. Even babies & some dogs can do that.)
So I picked it up & the rest is history. To this day, it's an album I reach for often.
Gooblie Booblie!
