Great statue. Of course I love the planning by the organization. It probably won't be done in time for the 50 year celebration of the team that beat the Yankees. So fitting that the Pirates wouldn't plan better and have it done to be unveiled at that event.

So fitting that the Pirates wouldn't plan better and have it done to be unveiled at that event. Like with everything else these days, it's business. By unveiling it on a different date, they're guaranteed 2 sellouts instead of 1. BTW, I know the guy who really led the push for this statue. This wasn't the Pirates' idea.

I'm now told that the unveiling date is Maz's birthday. So that should 'splain the choice of that date.

Watching the Pirates on TV. Could they have posted a less exciting line-up for the first TV game of the season? It's nice to get a look at Pedro Alvarez. But Ramon Vasquez, Steve Pearce, & Brandon Moss? I was tired of looking at those guys by last July. I woulda preferred getting my first look at Jeff Clement, the Japanese second baseman whose name I'm not gonna try to spell right now, & even Tony Sanchez. Still, it's nice to have baseball back, eh?

Soon enough we will see what those other guys can do but I agree it would be more exciting to see them tonight.

Long-winded post time!
Spring training is here in earnest, so I figured I'd pose a few questions that are on the minds of the many Pirates fans out there. Then I figured I'd answer 'em. Feel free to answer 'em yourself, agree, disagree, or say you don't care.
The questions: 1. Garrett Jones: For real or fluke? 2. Will Jeff Clements field well enough to win the starting job at 1B? 3. Should Kevin Hart be a lock for the 5th starter spot? 4. Are you worried about Lasting Milledge's checkered past? 5. Are we better off up the middle with Cedeno & Iwamura as opposed to Jack & Freddie? 6. Is JR too bland & mild-mannered to manage the Pirates? 7. Will Pedro Alvarez play for the Pirates in 2010? 8. Will the Bucs break their string of losing seasons in 2010?
The answers, in order: 1. For 3 months in '09, Jones hit 'em out at a 42-HR pace for a full season. Nothing in his minor league record suggests that he's that kinda hitter. Still, he seems to have a good head on his shoulders & an uncomplicated swing, & he's a good athlete. So I'm thinkin' he can be a good Major Leaguer. I'm looking for 20-25 HR from him. 2. I never saw Clements play before, so I dunno about his defense. Nor do I care. If he can hit, he's gotta play. After all, we won a World Series with Dick Stuart at 1B. You wanna look at Steve Pearce again? 3. No. I'm far more impressed with Daniel McCutchen than Hart. The only good thing the brass ever says about Hart is that he's big. Hell, Orson Welles can be big. Can he pitch? 4. No. His "checkered past" consists of swearing on a rap record (a genre not exactly known for clean language) & not getting along with Billy Wagner (who is hard to get along with). In '79, we won the World Series with a group of guys who were supposedly trouble-makers with other teams---Milner, Foli, Madlock come to mind. On the Giants, Madlock tore up the line-up card in the manager's face coz he didn't like batting 5th, then came to Pgh. & happily batted 6th. I've learned not to worry about what guys do on other teams, as long as they're not drug addicts or criminals. 5. Since Freddy is injured again, we're probably better off at 2B with Aki. In retrospect, after winning the battle title, Freddy never shoulda been moved from 3B to a more demanding position. If you think we're better off at SS, try to imagine the Pirates ever signing a free agent SS just to keep Jack "interested." 6. Hell, no. Was Chuck Noll too bland to coach the Steelers in the '70's? Nobody wants to work for a boss that screams at 'em all day. So why do people think that professional athletes will respond to that? 7. Yes, but having Pedro open the season in Pgh. would be stupid. It would bring him one year closer to free agency. Some say the Bucs should make a statement & put Pedro on the team right now. I say they'll regret that when he reaches free agency one year sooner. I say bring him up around mid-May. 8. No.

Nice weather for opening day. I'm listening to the game on the radio. LA scored two runs in the top of the first. Cmon Buccos!

On Tues. night, I had to watch the Pirates on WGN. The Cubs announcers went way overboard talking about what a bad team the Pirates have. I wonder what they think tonight after being swept. They've probably jumped off the Clemente Bridge by now.

I hereby admit that I have underestimated Steve Pearce & take back every negative post I made about him at this & many other message boards. I've been impressed with him since his most recent call-up. He's stopped chasing pitches out of the strike zone, gives us good AB's, & has been hitting the ball well. His defense at 1B is vastly improved as well.
If I were in charge of the Pirates, I'd forget about playing Clement & Iwamura. In fact, I'd get rid of 'em. They would be replaced in the everyday lineup by Pearce & Young, respectively. Pearce for the reasons stated above. DY coz he can hit & altho' he isn't the greatest in the world at 2B, neither is Iwamura, whose range can fit in a thimble.
And that's today's sermon.
PS - Nice win today.

He's making like $5 million a year and was 0 for 40 or something like that going into today's game.
