He HAD to move to LA in order to do The Tonight Show. NBC would not change the location to NYC. Yes, he always wanted to host The Tonight Show but when this deal was first announced there was talk about him staying in NYC but NBC would not go for it. From what I've read about this, Conan would have preferred to stay in NYC. Nah. The Tonight Show has been in California since the '70's. It wasn't gonna move. Conan always knew that.

For an organization the size of NBC, moving the tonight show back to NYC where it started would have been a simple matter. So? So the requirement for Conan to move was unnecessary, and solely stipulated by NBC rather than decided by mutual consent. They presented him with what was essentially an ultimatum, to which he subsequently chose to accede. So there.

No, that may be what's happening now between him and NBC and whatnot but, that wasn't the situation then. i don't think you understand what i'm saying, when they offered the Tonight Show to Conan, he was honored and thrilled. he wasn't concerned or disappointed that the show is based in Cali. Those details were irrelevant. i'm just commenting on the post, "i hate that he had to move..." because i feel he wanted to move because he wanted to be on the Tonight Show. so how does that effect you in anyway that you have to hate it?

Ah. I'm sure he knew it was a pre-existing condition. He just did better work in NYC, as we have since seen. Would have made more sense to me for NBC to move the show to where their new host would be more at home. Obviously, this is in hindsight - though I had my doubts about how Conan would be received by the 11:30 audience (as I'm sure many did). A lot of people over 50 do not get him or his humor at all. The over 50 crowd numbers drop off quickly after midnight, so the bulk of Conan's Late Night audience trended younger than that of Leno's Tonight Show. NBC's mistake was in thinking that audience at 12:30 would necessarily translate into similar numbers @ 11:30, not taking into account that Conan was up against Craig Ferguson rather than David Letterman. That's a serious programming F.

And guitar playing stopped evolving after Roy. You remind me of somebody else. In fact, I think you're him. Don't worry. I won't tell your wife that you're also living with this Elphaba woman. Us guys gotta stick together.

That's a serious programming F. I don’t know what’s going on with NBC. They should’ve waited til Leno or Letterman was ready to retire before trying this stunt. They took the gamble with the 10pm time slot now and it spread them too thin and they’re going to lose one of their greatest assets. Conan deserves the Tonight Show but, at first I thought maybe, just maybe it was a little pre-mature. Just because of exactly what you said, the older audience wasn’t quite ready for him yet. But what’s done is done. You can’t give someone the crown then take it away. Leno should be the one taking the fall. I think Conan’s reaction to this is very classy. He’d rather quit than taint the Tonight Show or screw Jimmy Fallon outta his time slot he passed on to him. NBC = EPIC FAIL

I'm the one that said I hated that he had to move. It just seemed like such a waste. He was settled and comfortable in NYC. They also had a studio in NYC. Why did they have to build a brand new studio in LA? What happened to Jay's Tonight Show Studio? Is that what he is using at 10? If so it looks very different. And to move to LA and only do the show for 7 months! It's such a waste! I agree EPIC FAIL on NBC!

I'm reminded that when Johnny Carson retired from The Tonight Show, he entered into a contract with NBC to develop an original comedy show. He never did get around to it. Johnny was savvy in terms of the entertainment industry, & looking back, he likely knew that any such show would suffer the same fate as Leno's. Johnny was thus able to go out on top, rather than return to late night TV just to save face.
