Just received the following news feed from the wire service in my head:
Pittsburgh, PA, December 31, 2010 - The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced that due to anticipated warm temperatures and rainfall, the Winter Classic, originally scheduled for Heinz Field on New Year's Day, has been moved indoors to the Consol Unnecessary Center to be played at the originally scheduled time. As a way to accommodate 60,000 ticket holders in a 20,000 seat venue without losing revenue, the team has decided that one ticket will entitle the holder to watch one period of the Classic. Intermissions will be used to clear the arena so that the next 20,000 may enter.
"It's a stupid idea and intermissions will probably be a disaster," acknowledged team President Mario Lemieux, "but I decided to go ahead with it because the media, particularly Ron Cook, treats me the same as they treat Jim Leyland and never criticizes me no matter what I do. Hell, I could race naked through downtown and leave a big turd in the middle of Market Square and the media would praise my contributions to art in Pittsburgh. So wjhy not come up with a scheme to keep all the cash from the Classic's ticket sales?"
All kidding aside, it doesn't really say much for the NHL that they rely on this outdoor gimmick, however cool it is, to generate interest in a regular season game. You'd never see anything similar from the NFL, NBA, or MLB, & it's an example of the fact that hockey is still considered a regional sport in the US, as opposed to a national sport like football, baseball, or basketball.

Bravo. The Mister salutes your post.

The news of the passing of Johnny Wilson inspired me to search for some video of his teams & I came across this one of Bob Prince doing the TV play-by-play. At the time Penguins fans hated the way he presented the games, but I found him funny & entertaining, & if he sometimes mangled somebody's name or misidentified a player, so what, the team was bad anyway. Then again, I've always found hockey fans to be the most humorless of all sports fans. This video shows that altho' he was unconventional, he's right on top of the action & his analysis of the 2nd goal is on the money. Check this out.
