(CNN) -- Pop supergroup ABBA will join icons of the '60s and '70s -- Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, the Hollies and the Stooges -- as they are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year, the Hall announced Tuesday.
Both ABBA and the Stooges have been nominated in years past but have not made the cut.
The induction ceremony will take place March 15 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York .
The 2010 inductees were chosen by a voting committee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. Artists are eligible for inclusion 25 years after their first recording is released.
The inductees "represent a great cross-section of artists that define the broad spectrum and history of rock 'n' roll and people that have contributed immeasurably to our business," Foundation President and CEO Joel Peresman said.
ABBA, a Swedish group that became one of the most successful acts in pop history, released their first album, "Ring, Ring," in 1973. The group gained a new fan base last year with the movie version of the musical "Mamma Mia," which incorporates songs such as "Dancing Queen," "Mamma Mia," "Money, Money, Money" and "The Winner Takes it All."
Peter Gabriel was the original lead singer of the progressive rock band Genesis in the 1960s, but the group rose to greater popularity when he left in 1975 and was replaced by Phil Collins. Some of the band's more familiar songs include "Follow You, Follow Me," "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight," "Invisible Touch" and "We Can't Dance."
Cliff is a Jamaican ska and reggae singer who is credited with introducing reggae to a broader audience through his starring role in the 1972 film "The Harder They Come" and the release of the accompanying soundtrack.
Founded and led by the Iggy Pop, the Stooges were a forerunner of the punk and hard rock movements in the late 1960s.
Part of the British Invasion, the Hollies had a string of pop hits in the 1960s and were characterized by their three-part harmonies and squeaky clean image.
Two of the original members continue to tour today. The group released their most recent album, "Then, Now, Always," in March.

The Hollies, the Stooges, & Jimmy Cliff belong. Abba & Genesis don't.
The Hollies - Underrated band from the British Invasion. Also backed up the Everly Brothers on the classic but underrated Two Yanks in England. How could Graham Nash leave the Hollies for Crosby Stills Nash & Young. Isn't that a law firm???
The Stooges - The godfathers of punk, along with the Modern Lovers (who also belong). I saw Iggy once at what was then Heaven. From the waist up, he was dressed like a cop. From the waist down, he was dressed like a woman. He belongs in the Hall just based on that.
Jimmy Cliff - His eponymous debut album is one of the top 5 albums I own. The Harder They Come soundtrack is one of about a half-dozen albums that got me into reggae.
Abba - Too saccharine.
Genesis - C'mon, Phil Collins is old & bald. He's single-handedly screwing up the whole world.

My husband completely hates Phil Collins, and when I used to have the radio on in the kitchen, a Phil Collins song would ALWAYS come on when he walked in the room. It was comically consistent, like Phil was watching him.

"Sussudio" notwithstanding.

If so I will probably try to get to Cleveland and see what fan stuff I can go to for the event.

Enabler Know-it-all to the rescue! Genesis is the band in total - both Gabriel and Collins. No word yet specifically on who will appear at the ceremony. The ceremony actually does not take place in Cleveland. It is March 15 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. They always have it there.

What can I say, I was on a baseball message board debating the latest baseball HOF elections, so I thought I might as well stir things up regarding the Rock HOF. Genesis never did anything for me. Their popularity took off in 1985, the precise year that rock-n-roll music started going to hell. By that time punk rock had died & the record labels had successfully purged themselves of numerous worthy '60's & '70's musicians. Few people paid attention to Genesis in the '60's & '70's when there was always far better stuff to listen to. They may be rightfully compared to Emil Verban of the 1945 Cubs---a good ball player when the real ball players went off to war, but never a good ball player before or after. True, there's lotsa good musicians that nobody pays attention to (like Maxine Sullivan!) but in this case it seems deserved to me. This is probably just an issue that will be debated along generational lines & never resolved here anyway.

Don't Forget Ian Hunter and Mott the Hoople ! It will never be a Hall of Anything without them. Its funny that they can display Ian's " H " shaped guitar and the piano he wrote Cleveland Rocks on, but not induct the man himself. Such a travesty ! Mott did Ready For Love years before Bad Company. Mick Ralphs was also a member of Mott.

Mott did Ready For Love years before Bad Company. Mick Ralphs was also a member of Mott. Didn't know that. Bad Co. was the 2nd concert I ever saw in life, back in '74. I had the first 2 albums, but by the late '70's I had traded 'em for some punk rock albums. What can I say, too many good albums were coming out at once during that time & there was limited funds.

Abba? Donna Summer? LL Cool J?
I understand they were influential in popular music, but Rock and Roll" is a specific type of music and doesn't refer to pop music in general. It shouldn't be made meaningless.
