My laptop bit it today. Actually, it was attacked by some virus that got past my Norton 360 and is giving me pop ups for a bogus antivirus software product, connecting to the internet automatically to porn sites and not allowing any executable files to be opened.
It's about 5 years old, cracked, loose keys, heavy, etc. so I think it's time for a new one. The Geek Squad will charge $200 to remove the virus and diagnose the hard drive and files. So I figured it's time to pull the trigger and get a new one.
Anyone have any recommendations? The one I have is an HP Pavilion. I don't want to go to a netbook because I will use it for business and be using Microsoft office products frequently. Plus, the netbook keyboard is too small for my big hands.
Thanks for any input!

You can get decent laptops for under 600 clams. Almost any mfg. will have something suitable. Mine's a year old, and it's been fine. It's an Acer, but HP, IBM, et al will have something at a reasonable price point. I'll poke around and see what's current...

You have the vundo virus. Don't spend any $$ with the geek squad. It can be fixed. I can forward instructions later on if you like. Also, stay away from using Norton and McAfee. Trend Micro is a more robust application. For the time being don't use IE and switch to Firefox if you have it.

That would be awesome, gmac, thanks. I did get on Firefox and looked up removal sites, downloaded Spyware Doctor and Malaware files that are supposed to remove it but when I try to run the programs, they don't execute.

So if I get a mini-notebook, some come with Office trial and then you have to pay about $150 for a full version. I have Office 2003 and a pseudo-Adober Acrobat program on CD that I wouldn't be able to transfer to a mini. Or is there some way to that? I don't have a ton of money to spend.

All I have to say is don't get an HP. I have two or three issues with mine before it was two years old. Also, unless it has been addressed, these things run HOT, HOT, HOT. Nice in the winter though, keeps you warm. Not so nice in the summer, however. Just my two cents.

I actually have a burn mark on my left thigh from using it without either the lap desk or fan. I had a Gateway prior to this and it ran really hot too.

Dell is good. I don't know that they are the highest performance machine ever but hey are good enough for the average guy and reliable.

I see no one is taking my suggestion for an Etch-A-Sketch seriously. May I then recommend "Lite Brite"?

I'd gladly go back to the days of Etch-A-Sketch. Dell has sold off most of its manufacturing facilities so quality can be a factor but they have decent pricing and customer support. Stay away from IBM/Lenovo and HP. They're junk! Check out www.cnet.com before you decide and read the reviews. I absolutely would not buy a PC from Best Buy or any local retailer as some little geek will have you buying the special of the day. Check out newegg or tigerdirect and unless you absolutely cannot live without a notebook I'd stick with the desktop PC. If you feel adventurous you can buy a bundle and build it yourself and have total quality control. Also just ghost the drive and you'll keep all your original programs.

Newegg is a decent place. I bought a hard drive from them this year and they have really good prices. At least for their hard drives. A few people that I know shop there all the time.

I've been happy with Tigerdirect over the years. Never ordered from NewEgg have only heard good things about it.
