30 Days of Night - 8/10
This was in a Zombies DVD collection that my brother in law sent from Iraq - not sure why. Didn't realize that the vampires were subtitled. Just thought they were Russian. Guess I need to watch it again with the subtitles on.
Didn't like the sled dog killings. The vampires were extra creepy. Very savage movie but I liked it. The ending was sad but creative.

As you may know, my taste in horror runs to the psychological side, but I really thought this one was well done stem to stern. They covered most if not all the bases without any obvious "yeah, right" moments, which is something else I respect.

Nyah nyah nyah nyah, you liked a comic book movie, nyah nyah nyah nyah! Seriously, 30 Days of Night is one of the few movies that I think is better than the book it's based on. The vamp language is something new for the movie; in the comic, they speak English. Not sure why they did this, but I dug it.

Alone in the Dark ('80s movie, not the one based on the game)
In this very special episode of The A-Team, Howlin' Mad Murdoch goes undercover as a psychiatrist starting work at a "progressive" institution headed up by Special Guest Star Donald Pleasance. Murdoch's task is to replace the doctor treating a quartet of psychos featuring Extra Special Guest Star Martin Landau and Super Duper Special Guest Star Jack Palance. The psychos aren't buying Murdoch's act, so they take advantage of a blackout to escape and stalk him and the family he's pretending to head up.
Worst. A-Team Episode. Ever. Hannibal, Face, and BA never show up. Nothing blows up. Feh!
Waitaminnit. This is a horror movie? Oh, well, it still sucks. There's some interesting things here, to be fair. It's great seeing Pleasance playing a hippy version of Dr. Loomis, and Palance is really good (but appears way too little) as a recovering POW. But the idea of the patients wreaking havoc because they believe the new doctor killed the previous one isn't as developed as it should be. We never really get what the previous doctor did to warrant such devotion aside from Pleasance showing some cruelty and condescention once in a while. We're just supposed to assume they're devoted because they're nuts, which is pretty cheap. And that'd be forgivable if they went for the gusto and made it a slash-em-up, but there's way too much restraint to even appreciate it at that level. The "legendary" mattress scene goes by so quick that it doesn't generate the suspense that it could, and that's pretty much the only real horror scene in the movie.
With all the remakes going on, Alone in the Dark is one that should be remade. There's great potential, but in the end, it feels like a darker, low-rent version of that Michael Keaton movie The Dream Team. Also...no Mr. T. Meh.

Halloween 2007: I love the original and I never can understand why anybody remakes a classic, but I was up late and it came on and I decided to check it out. The first part was actually pretty good. I enjoyed learning the back story. However, as soon as he escaped from the mental institution it became predicable and preposterous. I understand that he is insane and feels no remorse when he kills. I don't understand how he became so strong (he was able to rip out a 1,000 pound head stone and take it back to his old house). How did he find his sister? Why was his house in such bad shape? It was only 15 years. The house looked as if 100 years past. What did Lori deliver to the abandoned house and why?
On a positive note, I was thrilled to see Ken Foree and some other neat cameos.

Zombie Honeymoon - 8/10
I liked this one because it was a different kind of zombie story. No hordes of slow moving, dim witted zombies - just one who is an unfortunate young husband who is attacked on the beach and slowly turns into a cannabalistic monster. And it's a love story. The lengths to which the wife will go to protect her husband and his sacrifice at the end are very touching. But there's still lots of blood, guts and chomping.
Did we show this at the 2007 Zombie Fest?

It wasn't at all what I was expecting, especially since the title makes it sound like another Dead & Breakfast. On the DVD, there's a mini-documentary, and it turns out the story was inspired by a real event. The writer/director's brother in law died in a surfing accident, so that served as the inspiration.

Diary of the Dead - 6/10
Kind of meh about this. Maybe I need to cleanse my palate and watch some non-zombie horror. Disparate group of people trapped together and/or trying to escape zombies. Only this time they're taping it. I couldn't muster any sympathy or empathy for this group.
A few good kills, both human and zombie. Nothing to write home about.
Scranton is more than 100 miles from West Virginia, isn't it?

Preliminary report on the My Bloody Valentine 3D Blu-Ray
Yep, sprung for my first Blu today while waiting for tires/oil change. Even on a standard def TV, it looks fantastic. I played a few scenes of the 2D version, and wow!
But that's not the big question, now, is it? Y'all wanna know how the 3D version is.
Let's start by lowering expectations: it is nowhere as good as the theater version. However, that's due to technology instead of a bad mastering. The Real 3D technology is simply not quite ready for home theaters just yet, so it's not as good as it was on the big screen.
That said...BRAVO, LIONSGATE HOME ENTERTAINMENT! If you remember, I was pretty disappointed with the Friday the 13th Part 3 DVD's 3D version. On a regular player, it was awful. On the PS3, it's better, but there's still too much blur and quite a few of the pop-at-ya effects lose too much impact. The reds and blues are so sharp they clash with the glasses.
Which leads to the really cool thing about this one: goodbye reds and blues, hello...wait for it...pink and greens! Yep, the lenses are pink and green. You're still gonna see ghosting, but the pop-at-yas work beautifully. The neat effect of the halos from lights in the mine is even present (but again, to a lesser degree). And there's even four pairs, unlike Paramount's stingy two pairs.
For those of you who'll stick with standard DVDs, reviews online say there's no difference in the 3D between the standard and the Blu, so you should be happy.
Very pleasantly surprised with how this turned out. Once again, don't expect the high quality of the Real 3D version from the big screen. But compared to previous 3D attempts on DVD, MBV3D is a huge leap forward. Here's hoping future releases -- Coraline, for instance -- take note.

I picked this up yesterday and haven't had time to watch it yet. I have always hated the red and blue glasses and kind of think I'll feel the same way with the pink and green but I guess we will see. Hoping the Blu-ray and an HDTV will give me good results. I'm not expecting theater quality 3-D and I believe it will be better than say Jaws 3-D or Friday the 13th and Amityville. So I'm excited.

I started watching Room 205 tonight but it was moving too slow and switched over to Harper's Island instead. Danish horror. Anyone seen this that can tell me whether to go back and watch the rest?
