THEM! - 1954 A staple of my childhood TV viewing, it was great to watch this again. Something that amuses me to no end, is how James Whitmore's character is constantly elevated in status, without any explanation. First, he's a cop in a patrol car, that discovers the giant ant's carnage. When James Arness arrives as the FBI agent, Whitmore tags along. Before you know it, Whitmore is in an Army uniform, firing a bazooka, then using a flame-thrower-(because everyone knows that the police regularly train, with these weapons....). He's eventualy wearing a suit, and sitting in on a meeting, with our country's top military officers....huh? Great movie, and still the best giant ant film I've seen :-) My rating 5/5, a classic of the atomic 50's. "Make me a sergeant in charge of the booze! Make me a sergeant in charge of the booze!"

THE WOLFMAN -2010
Just watched this twice, in the past five days. Benicio Del Toro has the same gaunt look that Lon Chaney Jr. had, in the original film. I enjoyed his performance. I applaud the film for living up to my expectations. Not once, did the movie ever stray from being a horror film. If I had to nitpick, the only real fault I could find with the movie, was Anthony Hopkins deadpan delivery of his lines. Maybe that's what director wanted? All I know is Hopkins comes off as a mumbling, crazy old geezer. Thumbs up to Hugo Weaving, as the police inspector. Can't wait to see him as the "Red Skull", in the up-coming Captain America movie.
My take 4.5/5, enjoyed the fast paced carnage, and the overall atmosphere.

SMASH CUT (2008) - Fun little flick that doesn't take itself seriously at all (which I like.) It stars David Hess as a deranged filmmaker who uses real body parts in his upcoming movie. There are a lot of homages to Herschell Gordon Lewis films (HG Lewis is one of my heroes.) Ray Sager and Michael Berryman also appear.

TRAPPED ASHES - 2006
Here's a horror anthology, that's clearly inspired by the classic Amicus anthologies, of the 60's and 70's. Actor Henry Gibson-(my goodness, he's still around?!)- takes a group of people, on a Hollywood backlot tour. They get trapped in one the horror-effect sets/buildings, and each has a scary story to tell. I enjoyed all but one of these stories, and the wrap-around tale will remind you of Tales From The Crypt-1971. Good to see John Saxon again, I had him autograph my DVD cover. He said he never saw the film, after he made it-(that was a few years ago.) No real complaints, I wish there more movies made like this. I found myself distracted by actress Lara Harris-(in a good way). I'd love to see more of her work.
My take 3/5, decent movie, bloody and sexy in parts :-)

Driller Killer - saw this on the 100 Years of Monster Movies chat. Although there were no monsters. And wow. Just wow. This was horrible, in a good way.

"The Last Broadcast" (1998)
It's hard to rate this mockumentary. Apparently, it was made for something like $900 and was the first film created entirely by camcorder. It seems there is some controversy over whether "Blair Witch" ripped their idea off this film. I gather there is also an IFC version that has a different ending than the DVD version.
Interesting from a film buff historian point of view. It doesn't stand up to much critical analysis, but then how many horror films do?

"Splice" 7.5/10
Definitely liked it. Again, another film I wouldn't want to start analyzing, because that would take all the fun out of it. Amazing performance by the young actress playing the critter. Definitely a couple of the more batsh*t crazy scientists you are going to run into.

SPLICE -2010 I'm not not going to analyze the film either. Not as much fun as SPECIES, but worth a look. Irresponsible scientsts and good creature effects, are off-set by a lousy script, and tacky gimmicks. Given the previews, I anticipated more , than what was delivered My take 2/5, expect sequels....

Cut (2000) - 4/5
Australian cast plus Molly Ringwald try to finish a cursed slasher movie. Slight comic element. I liked it. Kind of a twist ending.

Bloody Mallory (2002) - 4.5/5
Mallory and her team, including a transvestite, a mute telepathic child and a priest, search for the kidnapped pope in an alternate reality filled with demons and vampires. I liked it, it was a fun movie. Sort of like an amped up, really pissed off Buffy. Points deducted for the bad acting of the English dubbed actors (French film). Although, it helped the cheese factor.

I enjoyed BLOODY MALLORY. It's much better with english subtitles.
Watched this at Hulu.com, and soon after that, bought the DVD.

TRICK R' TREAT - 2008
I picked up this DVD, last year, based on positive reviews I read. Just watched it again, and was still impressed. Here's horror anthology, where the stories all intertwine with each other. Everything takes place on Halloween night. As much as I'd like to discuss the film, it would only spoil it, for someone who hasn't seen it. My only gripe is that it seemed a bit short, as the credits start to roll at 77 minutes. Anna Paquin has an amusing role, dressed like Red Riding Hood.
My take 4.5/5 a fun ride, cleverly written.

So, I am still plowing through the pile of dvd's I picked up when my Hollywood Video closed. Some real crap (DeNiro in Godsend - good god man, what are you thinking?!).
Then, all of a sudden, I found a fun little gem in the pile of fecal matter. Triangle (2009) is no endearing classic, but it was a fun little take on a classic theme (the drifting ghost ship in the Bermuda Triangle). No actor you ever heard of, or saw before as far as I know. What I really liked about it was the enormously complicated continuity plotting, which is soooooooooo rare nowadays. And, the occasional "holy sh*t!" moments were well worth the price of admission. I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10.

Out of the Dark (1989) - 2.5 out of 5
Late 80's slasher film about a killer terrorizing a group of phone sex operators. Featuring Karen Black and cameos by Divine (as a man), Bud Cort, Lainie Kazan, Tab Hunter and Paul Bartel. Mildly diverting.
