Dragon Age Origins -RPG-lots o' slaying, magic use, und blood. When the cut scenes come up after a battle, your character's face is splattered with the blood of your foes. (nice touch)
Vandel Hearts-Flames of Judgement-strategy RPG- when you defeat a foe, geysers of blood shoot out of there little bodies. (accompanied by death screams and geyser type sound effect)
Played The Sabatuer-a sandbox game not unlike the grand Theft Auto games but set in France during the Nazi occupation. Your character blows stuff up real good. I returned this one to the store after about one hour of play. It wasn't a bad game, I'm just not much for the sandbox type games any longer. (over done. however, Just Cause looks like it would be interesting)
Chrono Trigger on the DS - turn-based RPG (old school) very enjoyable. (no blood)
Me thinks I have too many games going on at one time.

Iron Rich- I recommend checking out gameplay videos on youtube, if Star Ocean The Last Hope interests you.
I have fond memories of playing CHRONO TRIGGER on the old SNES. Good game!
If Vandal Hearts:Flames Of Judgement *wasn't* a PSN download, and something I could just purchase at the store, I'd play it. I liked the first two VH games on PS1.

I would much rather go to the brick-und-mortar establishment and purchase a disc rather than download onto a console system. I just couldn't resist Vandal Hearts. I am addicted to turn-based strategy games. It's like playing chess whilst trippin' balls.

poejsick- It seems like the tactical grid-based RPGs are sort of sub-genre, that stand apart from other RPGs. My introduction to these kind of games, started with Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre on PS1. I've also enjoyed the Disgaea series.

Now playing-(or retro-gaming, as some would call it)- SUIKODEN IV on the PS2.
Pirate themed RPG that came out in the US, back in 2005. Turned based battles, with four active party members. The Suikoden series has a re-occuring element of recruiting 108 possible characters, to go along with completing the story. I've only played this once, and enjoyed it. However, it seems to be the least popular of the series-(by reading comments and reviews at gamefaqs)

Finished SUIKODEN IV, and just started SUIKODEN V.
Generally well liked by people that who enjoy the series, Suikoden 5 my personal favorite of the franchise.
PROS: 108 recriutable characters, that include some the sexiest females I've seen in a game. 6 active party members, and multiple battle formations to unlock and exlpoit. A fairly long game, that takes a while to complete. At one point, you get your own castle, which you can expand. Fun mini-games, with worthwhile rewards. Lots of villains and monsters to deafeat.
CONS: The main character looks like a sissy.....oh well. Army battles present a real challenge, and can be frustrating-(save before battle, then try it again)

It's what you would expect from a Suikoden title- long game, 108 characters, etc.

I agree, Suikoden Tactics is good. You can transfer your save file from Suikoden 4, to get Hero and Snowe, as party members. I found some of the optional dungeon areas pretty damn difficult. The final battle with all your levelled up characters is a blast.

Now playing TRINITY UNIVERSE on the PS3.
Here's hybrid RPG that features characters-(and some gaming elements)- from the DISGAEA and ATELIER IRIS series. There are two main characters- Kanata the Demon Dog King, and the Valkyrie Rizelea, each has a seperate path to play as. These characters often cross paths, and eventually join, by the end of the game. The story is played out like a Disgaea game, with anime story boards. The battles are in 3-D and are turn based, each character can use up to four party members. It's definately NOT your typical Japanese RPG, and may not appeal anyone not familar with the other games.
It is a fun game, loaded with humor. My favorite aspect of the game is how exploring dungeons work. The story takes place in the "netherverse", and objects in space float in and out. Among these objects are places where you can explore, aquire items and fight monsters. You can complelely ignore the story, and spend your time grinding-(my kind of game!) From what I've read at message boards, character levels go well into three digits.
There are gameplay videos on youtube, if you're interested.
