As many of you know, I'm somewhat involved in the celebration at what remains of the Forbes Field Wall in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh each Oct. 13 to commemorate the anniversary of the Pirates' 1960 World Series victory.
This year is the 50th anniversary of game 7 & also the 25th anniversary of the gathering at the Wall.
Horror Realm members in the Pittsburgh area (& those outside who feel like making the trip) are invited to attend. Here's a brief schedule of what's happening:
October 10-13 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette today reprinted its original newspaper coverage of games 1-4. Tomorrow they reprint game 5, Tues. game 6, & then on Wed., game 7 along with a commemorative insert.
October 11 An article about the event will appear in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
October 12 10:00 AM - City Council will issue a proclamation recognizing the event.
October 13 10:30 AM (approximately) - City dedicates a Walk of Fame by the Wall. 12:00 PM - City dedicates a plaque to commemorate Maz's blast. 12:15 PM - Preliminary stuff. 1:00 PM - The original radio broadcast is replayed.
Who sez the Pirates are losers??? We win the 1960 World Series every year!
Be there or be square.

About a week ago, I read that an actual film of the entire 1960 game, where Mazerowski clinched it for the Pirates was found. Actor/singer Bing Crosby was part owner of the Pirates, back then. He had someone film the game from a TV screen, onto 16mm film. This was found in Crosby's cellar.

The debut screening will be in Pittsburgh on November 13. Should be a tough ticket to come by.

Yep, I was there. I was very pleasantly surprised a couple weeks ago to get an email from MLB saying that they wanted me there as their guest. All of us who organize the Oct. 13 event each year got one. I had no idea how MLB got my email address until last Wed. when I found that this was all arranged by Frank Coonelly. I have no idea how he got my email address.
It was a fun night & a first-class affair. Maz couldn't be there---in the hospital with kidney stones---but there were 8 Pirates from the team, Yankee Bobby Richardson, Vera Clemente, Michael Keaton, Franco Harris, & Bing Crosby's son. Richardson was on stage with Bob Costas, along with Dick Groat & Bill Virdon, the latter taking Maz's place.
The format was that they'd show some of the game & then stop it for interviews. I won't say anything about it right now coz I don't wanna spoil the telecast for anybody. Maybe I'll fill in later if they skip something good. For now I'll say 2 things: 1. The video, altho' B&W, is not "grainy" as described in this morning's paper. It's perfectly watchable. 2. You absolutely will not wanna miss Bob Prince's postgame show. It's outrageously funny. We were falling outta our chairs laughing at what passed for a postgame show in 1960. It's hard to believe something could upstage the HR's of Maz & Hal Smith, but this might have.

Haven't had much time for this message board stuff lately...& this is kinda short notice...but we'll be out there at the Wall again tomorrow. Game time is 1:00. If it rains, the back-up plan is to play the broadcast under the tent across the street.
