They had a few good players in those days, but never enough of 'em. I had a chance to talk to Larouche a few years ago & he was really cool. Seemed to enjoy talking to a fan who remembered seeing him play. The Pens weren't real popular in those days. I've been to one Penguins game in my life, sometime in the early 80's. The only thing I remember about it is the Mario Faubert broke his leg and was wheeled off the ice on a stretcher.

Almosy anybody could afford to go to a hockey game. There was never a shortage of tickets. The seats we had were $7.50. The last I heard, those same seats cost about $75 2 years or so ago. When I managed the hockey rink on the Southside, the Penguins used that arena for practice. That was the year of the lockout. I got to be good friends with Doug Brown, Bryan Trottier, and Joe Mullen. They were all really nice guys. What was cool about hockey in the mid 70's was the post game rap up with Mike Lang. We'd listen to it on the way home. He had a call in show that was so great. That may still go on, I don't know. I lost interest when the ticket prices started getting out of hand.

That's when I lost interest, too. Shortly after they'd drafted Mario, Paul Steigerwald, who was working in the Pens' ticket office back then, was quoted in the papers as saying something to the effect that it was time to put the screws to the fans. Then they abandoned what was the most recognizable logo in all of sports in favor of an ugly pigeon-like creature. DeBartolo was quoted as saying that the logo need to look more "corporate." They were starting to cultivate the movers & shakers in this town as their fan base. Friends of mine who kept going to the games for a little while told me that the people in the expensive seats sat there reading The Wall Street Journal. On one occasion, an usher came up to them & told 'em to stop cheering so loudly, coz there were people there who were trying to talk business.
Oh, well. It was Hemingway who said that if you lived long enough, everything you truly love will have become sullied. The man was a sage.

The past 2 days have been something. The music I've been listening to has brought back a flood of memories. This normally doesn't happen to me. I've had Uriah Heep and Deep Purple rocking the Fantasy Factory, and some strawberry incense burning. Flashback.......... There was a bar on BC Street in Koza City, Okinawa, called the Champion Club. This bar had the the best bands on the island. Never knew their names, but Mondays and Fridays, the band played Deep Purple and Uriah Heep covers. The drinks were cheap and these guys played the songs note for note with a light show and liquid projections. The hot song was Space Truckin'. They'd copied the version on Made In Japan. They also concentrated on early Heep, like Bird of Prey and July Morning. Another band that played on Tuesdays and Thursdays played Black Sabbath and James Gang. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, they had a band that played the top 40. This was a bar where you could sit and drink and listen to the bands without being hustled for drinks. I read that Koza City has changed its name to Okinawa City. But BC Street is still there, about 3 blocks from the Kadena Air Force base gate. Rumor was that BC stood for " Bring Cash." Eh, just another old guy sitting around thinking about the past. Sorry.

I visited Arlo Guthie's website the other night. Just kind of curious as to how he's faring these days. I noticed that he would be appearing at the Byham Theater the first week of November. With wide eyes and shaking hands, I sent an email off to Joe. Upon further investigation, I noticed that one Gary Furnhorst would be the opening act. ( Probably on the sidewalk outside the theater. ) As my right hand clutched my heart and I caught my breath, I just couldn't believe the good luck. No one plays a wax paper covered comb with the deftness and accuracy of Gary Furnhorst. I even heard that Planbela would be hawking tickets in the tavern down the street.
This is definitely one you should bring the kids to. Arlo's shows are always family friendly. You will wish you could kick yourself if you miss this one. November 5th......... BE THERE DAMMIT !! ;D

I second this. I'm gonna be there for sure. I never miss Arlo or His Bobness when they come to Pittsburgh. Now that I know Dylan's fall tour is gonna be in South America & Russia, there's no reason for me not to see Arlo. The Gary Furnhorst opening act is just icing on the cake.
And we got Jorma Kaukonen in October, too.

The sound you just heard was a sigh of relief. The Looney Tunes in DC have finally given up their p*ssing contest and agreed to a new budget. Now all they have to do is vote on it. Let's hope they don't screw things up worse. I don't have much faith in the powers that be. I have a really p*ss poor attitude toward politicians. If they weren't so smarmy and two faced, it might be different. While they're shaking your hand, they're stabbing you in the back. Oh well, like they say........ If you can't keep it in your knickers, keep it in the family. How does Smurfette keep from getting knocked up, or don't Smurfs do the wild monkey dance ? I was thinking....( trouble comin' ) The Smurf movie might be enjoyable if you got stoned beforehand. Or ate some hash brownies and snuck a few in with you. But as Hunter S. Thompson once said, " I would never advocate the use of illicit narcotics. " So I better quit now.

Today's subject / object........ Lasix. This insidious drug has one purpose ; to make you whiz. I have to take 40mg in the morning and before I go to bed. All I seem to accomplish is whizzing, every 45 minutes for 6 hours. This means SJ doesn't sleep much. Its starting to p*ss me off. ( Pun intended.)

I'm not so sure a drug is even necessary. My cousin emailed me the other day, to tell me that he's realized that something I once told him is true. I'd told him that when a man is in his 40's, he should get to bed early, so he can wake up & pee. Once a guy is my age, the docs get concerned if he wakes up to pee more than twice a night, which fortunately doesn't describe me. Still, the doc suggested that I "do a PSA." I didn't know that PSA was an acronym for some test of the prostrate gland. I was thinking of when Shannon was on the radio & he often referred to a public service announcement as a PSA. When the doc told me to do a PSA, I replied, "Well, I'm nobody, but if you think it would help even one person, I guess I'm obligated to do it." She looked at me strangely & then finally we got to the heart of the matter. ANyways, the PSA showed nothing wrong. The getting up in the middle of the night thing just seems to be part of getting older.

I got my hair cut today. More gray hair than I wanted to see. Some white hair too. Whatever happened to that fresh faced boy that used to stare out from the mirror at me ? Long gone like a turkey through the corn.* ( Thank you Taj Mahal ! ) I never felt old until I saw more lines in my face than a road map ! But screw it........ I'm still young at heart. And I earned every gray hair. Still not ready for the old sailor's home.

For anyone interested : I'm SJ's brother Paul. This afternoon John had a heart attack and won't make it to Horror Realm. I got a call from the hospital late this afternoon. He's OK, but upset to miss his friends at the convention. With luck, he'll be home in a few days.
Paul
I also checked for any messages. He has his computer set up to fill in his password.

I knew he didn't check in at the show and I was worried that something might have happened. Please let him know we are thinking of him and wish him a speedy recovery.
