Friggin Bautista has 39 friggin home runs with Toronto. The most he ever had with the Pirates was 16. Typical Bucco luck.

Jose Bautista hit 2 on Monday, raising his season total to 40 HRs. He's got a chance to hit 50. I think it's a fluke, similar to Davey Johnson (43 HRs in 73) and Brady Anderson (50HRs in 96). Toronto was using Bastista as thier lead-off guy, at the start of the season, because he draws walks...funny how that turned out.
Pirate fans can laugh at the Mets, for giving Oliver Perez a big contract ;D

The pirates could have found a place for a guy who hits 25 home runs.

I guess I can't criticize the Pirates here coz at the time I wasn't real sad to see Bautista go. I never imagined he'd develop into this kind of player. In retrospect, it sure looks silly that they traded him to open up 3B for Andy LaRoche.

I kind of wish that the Red Sox would start to suck again so I could get tickets. I am going to the St. Louis series during my stay following Horror Realm.

I kind of wish that the Red Sox would start to suck again so I could get tickets. I was just in New England last week. There was a story on the local news in Providence about a woman who just hit the lottery. When they asked her what she was gonna do with her winnings, she said she was gonna get Red Sox tickets!

Long-winded post time! Spring training is here in earnest, so I figured I'd pose a few questions that are on the minds of the many Pirates fans out there. Then I figured I'd answer 'em. Feel free to answer 'em yourself, agree, disagree, or say you don't care. The questions: 1. Garrett Jones: For real or fluke? 2. Will Jeff Clements field well enough to win the starting job at 1B? 3. Should Kevin Hart be a lock for the 5th starter spot? 4. Are you worried about Lasting Milledge's checkered past? 5. Are we better off up the middle with Cedeno & Iwamura as opposed to Jack & Freddie? 6. Is JR too bland & mild-mannered to manage the Pirates? 7. Will Pedro Alvarez play for the Pirates in 2010? 8. Will the Bucs break their string of losing seasons in 2010? The answers, in order: 1. For 3 months in '09, Jones hit 'em out at a 42-HR pace for a full season. Nothing in his minor league record suggests that he's that kinda hitter. Still, he seems to have a good head on his shoulders & an uncomplicated swing, & he's a good athlete. So I'm thinkin' he can be a good Major Leaguer. I'm looking for 20-25 HR from him. 2. I never saw Clements play before, so I dunno about his defense. Nor do I care. If he can hit, he's gotta play. After all, we won a World Series with Dick Stuart at 1B. You wanna look at Steve Pearce again? 3. No. I'm far more impressed with Daniel McCutchen than Hart. The only good thing the brass ever says about Hart is that he's big. Hell, Orson Welles can be big. Can he pitch? 4. No. His "checkered past" consists of swearing on a rap record (a genre not exactly known for clean language) & not getting along with Billy Wagner (who is hard to get along with). In '79, we won the World Series with a group of guys who were supposedly trouble-makers with other teams---Milner, Foli, Madlock come to mind. On the Giants, Madlock tore up the line-up card in the manager's face coz he didn't like batting 5th, then came to Pgh. & happily batted 6th. I've learned not to worry about what guys do on other teams, as long as they're not drug addicts or criminals. 5. Since Freddy is injured again, we're probably better off at 2B with Aki. In retrospect, after winning the battle title, Freddy never shoulda been moved from 3B to a more demanding position. If you think we're better off at SS, try to imagine the Pirates ever signing a free agent SS just to keep Jack "interested." 6. Hell, no. Was Chuck Noll too bland to coach the Steelers in the '70's? Nobody wants to work for a boss that screams at 'em all day. So why do people think that professional athletes will respond to that? 7. Yes, but having Pedro open the season in Pgh. would be stupid. It would bring him one year closer to free agency. Some say the Bucs should make a statement & put Pedro on the team right now. I say they'll regret that when he reaches free agency one year sooner. I say bring him up around mid-May. 8. No. Anybody can make spring training predictions. It takes a real man to come back & review 'em after the last game of the season. I'll grade myself pass ( P), fail ( F), or incomplete ( I). 1. The BA coulda been better but I think Jones showed that he's for real. 86 RBI's in one's first full MLB season ain't too bad & I was right about the HR total. P. 2. Clemens didn't hit, so he didn't play. His defense never entered the discussion. P. I'm glad that he got a long look so the Bucs could figure out what they had, something they didn't always do when Leyland & McClendon, for instance, were managing, causing us to give up on some players too quickly. 3. Hart had the job in spring training & gave it back with a poor performance. P. 4. Milledge was here for a full year without becoming a trouble-maker, so his past meant nothing. P. He may have been misevaluated way back when the Mets made him their #1 draft choice. Still, with his BA's against lefties & in RISP situations, I think he can be a contributor to a good team, perhaps in a platoon situation. 5. Wrong about Aki, who wasn't preferable to an injured Freddy. F. Right about the erratic Cedeno. P. He's just too error-prone. We've had error-prone SS's in the past, like Frank Taveras & Dale Berra, but they also made great plays coz of their superior range & contributed to the offense. Cedeno does none of those things & thus is not an asset. This question was an I. 6. Well, Russell may or may not have been too bland, but he was too something or not enough something else, in light of the news story today that he will be fired. If the Bucs don't get 2 good starting pitchers, a new SS, a left-handed power-hitting RF to platoon with Milledge, & a right-handed power-hitting 1B to spell Jones, it won't matter who the manager is anyway. F. 7. Easy one. P. 8. Another easy one. P.

Speculation about the new mgr. has begun. Neal has interviewed Eric Wedge today---no big surprise there.
Somebody told me that KDKA is speculating that it'd be Andy Van Slyke, so that the team could return to the glory years. I wouldn't wanna see that, for a coupla reasons. First, Van Slyke was known as a flake off the field & that usually doesn't translate into a good mgr. Second, 1990-92 were not the "glory years." "Llegendary Lloyd" McClendon played on those teams, remember? What glory years did he return us to? The glory years were 1960, 1971, & 1979. By now anybody on the '60 or '71 teams is too old to wanna manage, but I wouldn't mind a return to 1979. Phil Garner would be a good pick. Mike Easler interviewed for the job when Lloyd was hired; he'd be a good pick, too. But nobody's gonna ask me.

I feel that these moves woulda been made even if JR were retained as mgr.
Not surprised about Duke. For the raise he was gonna command in arbitration, he wasn't worth it after the year he just had. Even with Yankee-like payroll flexibility, keeping Duke woulda made no sense from a fiscal standpoint.
Mildly surprised about the others. Neither had good stats. In Laroches's case, however, he's now a utility infielder, the main job of which is to field, which he can do. There's nobody else on the roster right now that the Bucs seem to be comfortable with in that role. And in DY's case, he's a good pinch hitter, & a lotta games come down to a pinch hit.
Of course, there's a reasonable likelihood that neither Laroche nor DY will be claimed by another team & they'll be invited to spring training to compete for a spot on the team. In Duke's case, this is good-bye forever.
