Dylan bootleg collectors were greeted by the following when then logged onto dimeadozen on Thanksgiving morning.
Eventually this will reach the 2 Dylan sites that I frequent & the party will be over for everybody but the tapers & a few close friends of theirs. I always knew that one of these days this day would come but it still sucks.

I always knew that one of these days this day would come but it still sucks. That's a real shame. I know how much you enjoy keeping up with his Bobness, but somehow, someway someone will find a way around all this. There are always underground things happening. I guess I'm using old time terminology, but the idea is still the same. In the late 60's bootlegs were called "underground" records.

I remember the term "undergrounds." It's always gone on, always will, but if the Dylan bootlegs can't be posted on line, the days of having every concert available the day after are probably gone forever. We'll be back to the old days of finding 'em in the more hip independent record stores. Do these even exist any more? And we surely won't find every concert. We'll find very few, probably 6 mos. after the fact.

Wow! I haven't updated this thread since 2010? That surprises me. To follow up on the last post, Dylan's people relented & have allowed bootlegs to continue to be traded on line. The problem is that the quality of the shows have deteriorated since 2011 & there have been very few worth downloading. By "very few," I mean literally no more than 3 or 4. More on that later.
So for tonight's Bob Dylan & Baseball tie-in, I note that His Bobness & the Pirates have each made critical free agent signings, so let's compare them:
Russell Martin, catcher - A definite upgrade defensively. When we signed him, I went to the Yankees message board to see what their fans were saying. Yankee fans can be rough, but they were pissed about losing Martin. The consensus was that his offensive numbers slipped coz he was playing hurt & Girardi overworked him. With McKenry catching a couple times a week, Martin's offense could improve.
Francisco Liriano, pitcher - I like this one. Being left-handed will favor him in PNC Park. He should also have an advantage in a new league. Being around Searage & Burnett should be a help to him, too.
Jason Grilli, pitcher - Forget about whining about the Hanrahan trade. This is the guy the Pirates want to close. He was the better pitcher in 2012. The Moneyball theory says that small market teams can't put a high percentage of their payroll into a closer who's probably gonna pitch maybe 50 innings a year. Look at it like Hanrahan was traded for Martin & Liriano, coz that's where the salary relief went. I'd trade a closer for a starting pitcher & a catcher any day.
Duke Robillard, guitarist - The news leaked that the legendary guitarist will be joining Bob Dylan's touring band in April 2013. Duke belongs on any thinking person's list of the all-time great guitarists. How many guitarists could play in Roomful of Blues, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Sunny & Her Joy Boys, & now Dylan's Cowboy Band? Since Denny Freeman was ousted in '09, the Cowboy Band has suffered. His replacement, Charlie Sexton, seems to have no rapport with the rest of the band, spending too much time at center stage drawing attention to himself, & altho' he's a good blues guitarist, he can't deliver the jazzy licks that Freeman did on Dylan's slower numbers. So I guess this is His Bobness's way of admitting that firing Denny was a mistake without admitting it. I doubt that they'll take the stage with 3 guitarists, so the question is, who's out, Sexton or Stu Kimball? And is it an amicable parting? My guesses are Sexton & no.
Analysis So who improved themselves more with these moves, the Pirates or Dylan? Duke is, as noted, one of the all-time great guitarists; I'd put him somewhere in the top 5. For the Pirates to have signed players of similar portfolio, we'd be talking future Hall of Famers. As good as Martin, Liriano, & Grilli can be, they're probably not in that category. Of course, Dylan's estimated net worth is $80 million. He has a bit more to spend on payroll than the Pirates do. So it's Dylan with the edge so far. Spring training starts in Feb., as does Dylan's rumored Australian tour, so both Dylan & Neal HIntington have time to make more improvements.
