From August to October, we horror fans obsessed with building the ol' film collection will have to do one of the following:
-- sell off junk in the dwelling -- sell blood -- sell themselves
The reason for this is because there's a ton of cool coming down the pike. Not only will we have titles making their first appearance on DVD but those of us who've gone Blu are gonna see some catalog titles getting the upgrade.
I figured we could work on a list here, but I wanted to start with some big surprises.
The first might be only of interest to me but I hope not. Richard Stanley's Hardware is coming to both DVD and Blu in September. The only reason I found out about it was through checking out Diabolik DVD's catalog, where you can preorder it. (Which I did.) Awesome punk, killer-robot movie, and this should be a nice package since the same company released Stanley's Dust Devil two years ago in a fantastic (and reasonably priced) five-disc set.
Next up is a rumor, but here's hoping it's true: retailers are apparently getting a notice from Genius Pictures -- the home-video distributor for Miramax/Dimension -- to expect Grindhouse on August 11 on Blu-Ray. This could possibly be the original theatrical version with the fake trailers and such. So far, only one shop has it for preorder, and would you believe...Wal-Mart?
Last, but certainly not least: Phantasm II! Universal's bringing it to (so far) DVD only in October. No word on extras and such yet.

Correction: Phantasm II comes out September 15. Got it mixed up with the upcoming Night of the Creeps DVD.

Before he was Locke, he was...THE STEPFATHER! Okay, that was cheesy, but the good news is that the first two Stepfather movies are coming to DVD. But thanks to pesky rights issues, the second movie will come out before the first one: Synapse is releasing Stepfather II on September 29, and Shout Factory has announced the original for October 13. (Kooky, yes, but not all that bad; ask any Phantasm fan about having DVDs in the series out of order.) Finally, from the "Good Idea, But..." Files, Sony Home Entertainment is allowing fans to pick the cover art for the upcoming Night of the Creeps DVD via Amazon.com (and no, you don't have to buy anything to vote). Pretty sweet, yes? Uhhhhh...yeah, but your three choices are pretty freakin' awful. Click here for your covers and a link to the Amazon page where you can vote.

September 15: American Werewolf in London Full Moon Edition. It's coming to both standard and Blu. Click here for the extras. And now, from the Good News, Bad News Department... The Good: The Exorcist is coming to Blu-Ray on September 8 The Bad: It's The Version They Never Should Have Releas-- uh, I mean The Version You've Never Seen. The one where they digitally slap Captain Howdy and Pazuzu on any empty space they could find.

Those of you who've gone to Blu-ray but begrudgingly put in a preorder for the standard-def Night of the Creeps DVD...yeah, you can go ahead and cancel that preorder. Sony has announced a day-and-date Blu-Ray.
I have high hopes for this one. Fearnet ran Night in high-def about a year or so ago, and it looked pretty damn amazing.

For my fellow Blu enthusiasts, here's a list of what's coming down the pike in the next couple of months (I'm leaving off the stuff I already listed):
Yesterday: Big Trouble in Little China, The Beast
August 11: The Ninth Gate, See No Evil (the one with Kane from WWE), Alien Trespass
August 18: Dexter Season 1-3 set, Dexter Season 3, Last House on the Left '09, Surveillance
August 25: Children of the Corn (though I could have sworn I just saw this out somewhere), A Haunting: Twilight of Evil
September 1: Supernatural Season 4, The Girl Next Door: Unrated
September 8 (aka D-Day): Creepshow, Freddy vs Jason, Texas Chainsaw remake, Dead Calm, Fringe Season 1, and Snakes on a Plane (Warner is also unleashing a ton of non-horror stuff this day)
September 15: Child's Play, Grace, The Hannibal Lecter Anthology (Manhunter, Silence, and Hannibal), Misery, Van Helsing, Wrong Turn, and Wrong Turn 2
September 22: Godzilla King of the Monsters (the original), Hot Fuzz (not technically horror, I know, but the plot does borrow from a certain British horror movie), Shaun of the Dead, and The Haunted World of El Superbeasto
September 29: Book of Blood Director's Cut, New York Ripper, and Henry: Potrait of a Serial Killer
October 6: Trick R Treat (finally!), Audition Collector's Edition, Ghost Ship, Offspring, The Thaw, Seventh Moon, and The Children
October 13: Natural Born Killers Director's Cut (again, not exactly horror, but enough elements to be worth mentioning), The Craft, Wolf, and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (Branagh/Deniro)
October 20: Wrong Turn 3 and Willy Wonka (which has its creepy moments).
October 27: NIGHT OF THE CREEPS, The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue (aka Let Sleeping Corpses Lie) and Orphan (yeah, the movie that came out last week)

My interest in the upcoming release starts out slow. Not interested in anything until Trick R Treat. But if that is the only movie I buy for the rest of the year I'll be excited. Natural Born Killers and Night of the Creeps will probably be purchased as well.

Do yourself a favor: pick up Big Trouble in Little China! Just finished watching it and WOW!
Also, Children of the Corn is available. My local Best Buy has several copies. (I know, I know, but they were the only store where BTiLC was available, and even then there were only twocopies.)
FYI, the info above comes from the website Hi-Def Digest. Credit where credit is due.

Bad news: Night of the Creeps is delayed...but only a week
Amazing news: The Exorcist Blu-ray will contain both versions of the movie!
EDIT/ADDENDUM: Bad news but understandable -- The Exorcist is now delayed to next year (possibly around Halloween). They're using the time to work on the masters and film brand-new extras to go on the disc, so yeah, it sucks but I'd prefer an amazing set than a rush job. (Hope they carry over the BBC documentary that was on the first DVD, though.)
